‘Take care of your own well-being’: Mental health symposium for catholic teachers celebrates self-care and community

Catholic school teachers and administrators attended a self-care symposium at the CHI Health Center, focusing on well-being, laughter, and mutual support.

Teachers and administrators from Catholic schools across the region gathered at the CHI Health Center for a personal development day dedicated to self-care.

Stacey Uttecht is the principal of Holy Trinity Elementary School. She said it’s a good time for everyone to come together and focus on their mental health.

“It’s amazing to see all the educators and administrators from the Catholic schools come together, and they’re coming in joyful, and you see laughing and smiling amongst each other, just having the state for themselves,” Uttecht said.

Uttecht said she understands the continual struggles that teachers face, and she believes this is a good opportunity for teachers to release their stress.

“There are lots of pressures and stress for our staff and our schools, and we want them to feel comfortable and know that they are supported and that they have tools and strategies to use not only for themselves but for the students in the classroom,” she said.

The Mental Health Symposium started as an idea with teachers in mind. Catholic Charities said they wanted to provide a day filled with opportunities to laugh, love, and learn.

Vickie Kauffold is the Superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Omaha. She said that this is a good reminder for teachers to show up as their best selves so they can teach students effectively.

“You can’t give what you don’t have,” Kauffold said. “If we do not take care of our own well-being, then it’s really difficult for us to properly care for the emotional needs of others, whether it’s our students or colleagues, and you can’t really support them.”

The organizer said the event highlights their goal to support those who nurture the next generation of learners.

“We have a keynote speaker and other session speakers including laughter as part of their programs. There are fun, joyful activities and prayer sessions included.”

Organizers said they hope the symposium plays a role in ensuring that educators have the necessary resources to maintain their well-being while continuing to support their students effectively.
